So, some of you may recall that I have an affinity for comics. I mentioned my love here once for Darby Conley's "Get Fuzzy", and now I have another comic I thought I'd wax lyrical about today- a webcomic, Wondermark, by David Malki ! Always silly, sometimes juvenile (yes, he does some poop-jokes...), and occasionally brilliant, Wondermark is a comic that is relevant today because it is so in touch with the past. Like Trader Joe's advertising on steroids (I'm sorry to say I don't know who was doing it first!), Wondermark uses Victorian engravings that are cut, re-assembled, tweaked, and very much twisted (it's not really P.C.) to form fantastic comic strips. My very favorites are the ones that make little sense, or have clever things to do with cats.

Very reminiscent of Winsor McKay, who wrote and drew Little Nemo in Slumberland, one of my all-time favorites We recently bought the books that reproduce the full-color Sunday ones (the books are the same size as the originals), which are simply amazing. For those of you who don't know the premise of Little Nemo, most of the strips start with Nemo being put to bed, where he proceeds to have colorful, outrageous, and ridiculous dreams, causing him to fall from bed. This always gets his parents running in, usually accusing Nemo of having eaten something ghastly before bedtime. The strips are always gorgeous, often strange, and typically quite funny. I highly recommend them.

Wow! Wonderful! I hadn't looked on the site since Fri, so that's pretty darn cool! I believe I won a copy of Malki !'s latest book, "Clever Tricks to Stave off Death." Great title, huh?
